“Morning Mercies”

"Morning Mercies"

I love to read the Bible and do “word searches” with a concordance.   I also love to paint.  I was introduced to using calligraphy in painting by an artist, Debbie Slavin http://calligraphybydebbieslavin.com/

One of my favorite Bible passages is Lamentations 3:22,23,24 “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions (mercies) never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.  I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.'”

I had an idea for a design — using part of the verse and a rooster, but had no idea where to start — except it was to have a rooster and the verse.

Enter my mentor, Paul Seymour of Creative Legacy Studio.  He showed me how to find inspiration for my rooster.  I drew up the design — he showed me where I needed to fix things — I had some elements pointing the eye right off of the painting!  The color scheme was another “trial and error” process.  I used a limited palette — and mixed colors.  I used texture medium in an unusual way — and of course it didn’t work the first time I textured the piece.   The first time I calligraphied the verse, it was too light.  Some of my rooster feathers weren’t long enough.  The rooster needed to be grounded, because he was floating 🙂

Paul patiently worked through all of these challenges with me.  I must admit that I was reluctant to finish it (re-paint the verse) because it didn’t look anything like my brain said it should look.  But, I have come to terms with the fact that my original idea has morphed into what you see in the picture.

I am very proud of it — I am going to make it into a pattern packet!   I appreciate Paul’s help.  I understand the importance of finding a mentor to bounce ideas off of.  Paul is my hero 🙂

I pray for new grace and mercy each morning —   This piece is very special to me!

That is my favorite bible verse…I say it often before my feet hit the floor. The earlier post…wow Amanda looks like your grandma.

Love it. The rooster feathers are exquisite, and the verse gives me hope upon hope.

It amazes me that you can create something like that just from an idea in your head. All my ideas in my head look strikingly like something I’ve already seen! 🙂
